We survived another Portland winter and got our fair share of rain and snow. The spring flowers are starting to bloom and we are all looking at what we need to do to make our homes and yards look great again for summer. Once all of the rain stops and the temps get back to half way warm it is a great time to make a list of projects we need to work on. Here are a few items to look for so you can plan ahead and get a jump start on projects before it is too late.
Take a look at your decks and how they weathered over the winter. They usually don’t look better after a Portland winter. They tend to have mold, mildew and debris all over them. They can be slippery and dangerous if not taken care of. I highly recommend at the very minimum cleaning them with a deck wash and scrub brush. Some decks need special care when cleaning so make sure you have the right products. If the deck has wood rot you may want to replace some bad boards before someone gets hurt. If the deck is off the ground very high you might want to inspect the underside and see if the supports still look safe or if the deck might have problems. If you see any signs of danger you might call in an expert to look at it.
Of course I must recommend inspecting your paint job and caulking every year. Paint and caulk are meant to last many years but that does not always happen. Depending on weather and your type of siding it may need maintenance every year or two to protect everything. Inspect your gutters and downspouts as they can get damaged with falling debris, ice and snow over the winter. If they are starting to pull away from the home or you can see a garden growing out of them it may be time to give them some love so they don’t cause you heartache down the road.
Of course this is not a complete list of your Spring home maintenance but start with these simple things and then plan ahead. Contractors in the Portland are busier than ever and may take weeks or months to get to any work you may have. Get on their list early so you are not stuck going another winter.
