The cold wet weather is upon us in the Portland area now. The leaves have fallen and snow may be on the way soon. This time of year is beautiful but can be damaging to your home if you do not do a few small things to protect it.
Once you have all the leaves off the trees in the fall you should take time to go inspect the inside of your gutters and make sure they are free of debris. Check to make sure the downspouts are working properly and not clogged up causing overflow when it rains. Faulty gutters and downspouts cost homeowners thousands of dollars in repairs when the water is running down the siding and causing rotting issues that may not be seen for years.

Take the time to get any leaves or snow off of your decks as soon as you can. Any type of debris or snow that sits on a flat deck surface will cause damage and leave marks. It will break down your stain and can start to rot the wood away. With the average deck costing well into the thousands of dollars it is worth a little cold weather maintenance.
Don’t forget about your grass either. The leaves can cause your grass to have dead spots when they sit very long especially when they are wet. Rake the leaves off the grass if nothing else to extend the life of your lawn.
Taking a few hours out of your fall and winter to do some quick work around the home can make a big difference in your repair bills and help you enjoy yourself when the great Portland weather returns.
