Many products that we use at Absolute Painting come with a really long warranty. Many of the paints we use come with a 25 year or lifetime warranty on the label. Customers often see this and don’t believe that paint will last that long.
This is very true that paint typically won’t last forever especially on the exterior of a home in the Portland area. The warranty typically will cover certain types of paint failure but not all types. Paint almost always fades of time especially if it is facing south or west and gets hot sun. Color fade is not covered under a typical manufacturer’s warranty.
Other types of failure could be adhesion to the surface. In most cases paint will adhere to the surface if it is prepared correctly. In some cases such as with old wood siding paint can have problems even if the surface was prepared correctly due to moisture issues or other problems with the siding. This is also not covered under a paint warranty as it is a siding issue and not a paint failure.
Paint usually will not fall off your home for no reason and a good painting contractor should be able to tell you where you are likely to have problems as soon as they look at your home. Some problems are just impossible to fix.
If you do have a paint failure that is not caused by bad siding or normal fading you can call the sales rep or your paint contractor to have them look at the problem. The paint manufacturer will typically give you enough new paint to fix the problem but will not pay for labor to do the work. If you have a good warranty with your contractor they may fix the problem if it was due to the application.
Don’t be scared by these warnings as paint failure is not very common if you have a good contractor doing the work. Just know that no paint is going to last forever especially with the Portland weather. A quality exterior paint will pay for itself in the long run and help protect your home.
