At Absolute Painting & Power Washing we take great care to ensure that our customers are satisfied with the work that we do, it’s in our guarantee. One of the ways that we do this is by selecting quality tools to perform the job. The paint brushes we choose to use are made by Purdy. Not only do we use a quality brush, we choose the correct brush for the type of paint that we are using and the surface we are painting.
There are basically two material types that paint brushes are made from: there are synthetic and natural. The synthetic paint brushes usually come as either a nylon/polymer combination or as 100% nylon or 100% polyester brush. Natural fiber paint brushes are usually made of an animal hair; like the hog or ox.
When Absolute Painting is using an oil based or alkyd paint, usually on an exterior paint job, we use a natural bristle paint brush. Animal hair brushes can hold more paint, spread it evenly, and do not react to the solvents that are in oil based or alkyd paints. Also the hog hair bristles are flagged or split at the ends, this will help produce a finer finish.
When we are using water based paints, usually an interior paint job, we use a synthetic bristle paint brush. If the surface we are painting is particularly rough we use a polyester/nylon blend brush. This combination of synthetics aides in the flexibility of the brush. When the surface is smooth and the climate is controlled we tend to go with a nylon brush. A nylon paint brush allows the paint to release better which means a smooth and even flow onto the surface. Now that we know what type of paint brush to use let’s talk about the physical qualities of the paint brush.
Big, little, wide, or thin, paint brushes come in all different sizes. Why do they come in so many sizes? So we can paint things of all different sizes of course. First up is the angled sash brush, anywhere from 1” to 2 ½” wide, it’s used to paint trim, moldings, and window frames. For doing all purpose exterior painting we use a 4” brush that is about 1” thick, with dense, compacted, bristles. The general interior painting brush of choice, for us, is a 3” brush that is the same thickness. For painting corners and doing cut work inside of a building we use a 2” paint brush.
When you decide to paint use quality paints and quality brushes. If you decide to hire professional painters and you live in the Portland, OR area please don’t hesitate to call Absolute Painting & Power Washing.
