About Latex Paint

by | Jul 18, 2013 | Home Maintenance, Interior Design, Interior Painting

Latex paints are used by the professionals and the do-it-yourself types as well. At Absolute Painting & Power Washing we are no different. In that we are professional painters and that we do use latex paint; a lot. Latex paint is one of the most popular type of paints available in the market today.

The question is: Why is latex paint so popular? For several reasons really. First is the variation of finishes that latex paint comes in: flat, satin, semi-gloss, and gloss.

  • Flat – Is exactly what it claims to be, a finish with no shine to it all. This paint finish is found in hallways and restrooms. Cleaning can be a chore as it does not stand to a lot cleaning.
  • Satin – A step above flat, has a slight shine to it. It can be found on ceilings, doors, or trim, but sometimes it is used on walls as well; usually in bathrooms.
  • Semi-Gloss / Gloss – These varieties have a lot of shine to them. They stand up to cleaning the best, and provide the most protection.

Another reason for using latex paint is because it tends to be elastic, even after drying. So as time goes by the paint can still move and flex with the home as it settles. It is also accommodating with temperature fluctuations.

Besides being durable and having variations in finish… latex paints can be used on a wide variety of surfaces. Besides wood latex paints can be used on metal, brick, stucco, and vinyl. Since these are a water based paint they clean up with water too.

As with anything chemical there are negatives as well as positives. Unless you are using green products you can expect odors and fumes until the paint dries completely. The odors and fumes are generated by what is known as volatile organic compounds. These compounds can be toxic in large quantities and can contribute to pollution as well.

Another thing to consider when using latex paint is that it does not bond well to previously applied oil based paint. To repaint a surface that has had oil based paint applied you must first carefully strip away all the old paint; which is a very time consuming process.

So that is a small portion of information about latex paint. Remember if you live in the Portland, OR area and would like to paint the interior of your home give us a call at Absolute Painting & Power Washing. We will come to your home and do a thorough proposal for any of the services we offer.
