Most Popular Bedroom Paint Colors [Updated for 2021]

by | Oct 13, 2020 | Interior Design, Interior Painting

Bedroom paint color trends as we move into 2021 continue to be a study in contrasts. Colors tend to be either a subtle shade of white or ultra-deep rich tones like a hunter, teal, or navy. Neutrals are warm and earthy. In the COVID world, many are spending more time at home dealing with the stresses of parenting, teaching, working, or not working. We are all looking for comfort, safety, and sanctuary. Think cozy spaces with heavy texture on pillows, throws, and rugs. Rooms that make you feel like your favorite sweater on one of the first chilly fall days in front of a fire. Rooms that feel like a hug!

Most Popular Bedroom Paint Colors

It was exciting to see one of my favorite colors, Urbane Bronze as Sherwin Williams Color of the Year for 2021! This is a great color with such depth, it plays beautifully under any kind of light bringing out it’s inherently rich, complex layers. It’s bold but not harsh so it can be used as a backdrop whether designing with warm natural wood tones or a more contemporary look with black and white.

Tired of gray and looking for something new? Take a look at the intriguing Mystical Shade by Sherwin Williams. This elegant tone offers a sense of peace and serenity perfect for any bedroom amidst the chaos of 2020.

Master Bedroom Painting Trends and Styles

When considering bedroom paint colors for a master bedroom or main bedroom, it’s important for them to be special and a little different than the rest of the house. It should be an oasis and feel like a bit of an escape. Think about your favorite getaway, perhaps a fabulous trip, memory, or luxury hotel?

Having said that I do think it’s important that the master bedroom and bathroom work together to achieve the overall design. I like to use a darker color in the bedroom and a slightly lighter color in the bathroom.  First Light is a beautiful rose, blush tone from Benjamin Moore. First Light offers a soft, almost candlelight type glow. It’s stunning and perfect for a master bedroom. Look for ways to add visual interest by adding additional millwork/paneling or shiplap and painting the woodwork a different color or, play off of a fabulous wallpaper accent (yes, it’s back). In design, the more subtle the color, the more important introducing different textures is to the overall aesthetic.

Don’t forget the closet! In kids’ bedrooms in particular, their clothes hang short so paint along the lower half, put in a cozy reading nook with a bean-bag chair, a desk or a dress-up station.

Use the whole room and let architecture be your guide.  Have old wood floors that have seen better days? Paint them and include a fun painted rug! Wallpaper the ceiling. Have a small room with an old chair rail? Make the room look larger by moving the trim up to 18” down from the ceiling and paint above the trim and the ceiling the same color. Kids’ bedrooms are SO much fun to design and always evolving. Gray, taupe, mushroom, and navy offer a timeless base as kids grow to which you can add and change as they find their own voice and opinions. Paint the ceiling for a quick update or a simple geometric design can be done to give a whole new look.

For the aspiring artist, encourage their creativity by installing a gallery wall.  Fresh white walls with assorted wall frames allow kids to feature their own art.

Boho is everywhere and is the perfect way to spark a sense of adventure and travel. This style is eclectic by nature and allows for a lot of freedom as they discover their own design aesthetic. Lots of layering in patterns, rugs, pillows, and throws creates a sense of warmth.

Think of new ways to update or change your look by adding a strong geometric pattern. Strong contrast between the two colors gives you one look or make it a little more subtle by using two colors that are more similar to each other, or you could even add a metallic element.  A similar look can be done with a Sharpie Paint Pen! (yes, THAT Sharpie) Imagine writing a Love Letter on the wall or a line from your favorite song, poem, or scripture!
