Homeowners in the Portland area ask us all the time when they should paint the exterior of their home. Most paint companies will say that you can paint when the temperature is above 35-40 degrees. This is not a good idea. The surface temp is also very important. Metal surfaces such as gutters may be too cold to paint even when the weather seems good. Depending on the type of siding you have can also make a difference as to when you should paint. Homes with Hardie Plank siding can typically be painted earlier in the season as they do not hold a lot of moisture. Cedar siding on homes may need to sit a little longer before getting painted as it can absorb moisture during the wet season. At Absolute Painting & Power Washing we prefer not to do much exterior painting until April or May when the temps are slightly warmer. Some years in Portland we are forced to wait even longer. Just be wary of any painter that wants to do exterior painting in early winter or late fall as this can cause major issues. Our goal is to get the paint to last you as long as possible to save you money in the long run.
