The Portland area is blooming with flowers this time of year. The trees and bushes look amazing and are growing quickly around our homes. Although these all look amazing they can be very damaging to your home. At Absolute Painting we often see the damaging effects that come from bushes and trees growing too close to homes.
Why does this damage your home. If you have bushes, trees or flowers growing against your siding it is trapping moisture against it. This is especially harmful with any type of wood siding or wood trim. The moisture gets trapped in the bushes and does not airflow happen. Any moisture trapped against wood can cause it to deteriorate very quickly.
In Portland we see so many homes with dry rot issues due to various reason. These problems cost hundreds or thousands of dollars to repair. Many people do not even know they have dry rot for years and it just keeps getting worse. Many times the rot can be avoided by not trapping moisture against the home or by applying primers and paints more often. Caulking is another way to keep moisture from damaging the home.
It is best to take a good look around your home every year and make sure you have at least 12” of space between your home and the bushes. Fall is a great time to make sure it is all cut back right before the heavy rains begin. Of course if you are going to paint your home you would want to do this before painting as well. If you have any questions or concerns about dry rot or other home issues please call us and we are happy to help.
