Helpful Homeowner Hints

by | Oct 21, 2013 | Home Maintenance

The sun is making a few final appearances for the year before the rain returns. We are working hard to finish all of our exterior painting projects that have been weather delayed for the past couple weeks. At Absolute Painting & Power Washing we believe in helping our customers avoid costly home repairs by keeping them informed on how to prevent them. Most of these items can be done by homeowners in just a few hours or by a professional handyman or painting contractor.

Here are a few suggestions before the bad weather hits again:

Take a walk around your home and inspect everything including siding, roof, doors, windows and wood trim on home. Look for anything unusual that could be causing problems in the future. If you see paint peeling or caulking that is failed it should be fixed when the weather allows. Inspect all wood surfaces especially areas that have direct weather exposure. Rain can cause wood to rot out very quickly and cost hundreds or thousands of dollars. Any type of wood window frames should be inspected very carefully on an annual basis.

Take time to look closely at your roof every year. Do you see moss growing on it? That will do a lot of damage over time and shorten the life of your roof. Spending about an hour a year or paying someone to apply a moss treatment is well worth your time and money.

Caulking can be a very important part of protecting your home from water intrusion. When Absolute Painting & Power Washing paints your home we inspect and repair or replace the caulking if it has any issues. Sometimes caulking is more for looks and other times it is extremely important for protection. If you do not know the answer please call us, we can help inspect it for you.

Remember to take the time before the cold weather hits to cover outside faucets and pipes. Freezing pipes can cause major damage to your home.

Take the time to remove anything from your decks that will trap moisture against the wood such as potted plants. We refinish many decks each year and the main cause of rotten wood is moisture being trapped against the wood and going too many years between treating the wood. Try to maintain your deck with stain every couple of years if it is exposed to the weather and don’t forget to remove any leaves or debris that collect on it very quickly.

My final recommendation would be to cut back any trees or bushes that are touching your home. They can also trap moisture against your siding which is very bad for the paint job and can cause dry rot issues in the future.

Please give us a call if you need any advice on anything listed above, we are happy to help.
