At Absolute Painting & Power Washing we visit a lot of homes every year. Most homes in the Portland area have either nail pops or some sort of settling cracks. These are typically from the home having areas that move more than others either from settling over time or from movement due to movement in the home.
Homeowners typically want to get these fixed when they get the interior of their home painted. Nail pops and settling cracks can be annoying and can keep coming back over and over again if not fixed properly. With nail pops you may need to dig into the drywall and pull the nail/screw out completely. Some people will install a better or larger screw to fill the gap prior to filling the hole. You can then fill the hole left behind using a lightweight spackle or a drywall mud. Let it dry and sand smooth as needed. You can then apply a texture to match what you have on the walls currently. Most walls in the Portland area have orange peel texture that can be purchased in a aerosol can at your local Sherwin Williams or Miller Paint stores.
Settling cracks tend to keep coming back if filled with a spackle or a mud. You may try filling them with a caulk that can be painted and the crack will be more flexible and hopefully not return. You can also texture over the caulk after it has dried if you feel that it needs it. Just remember that when you go to do touch up painting the spots you touch up will not blend in perfectly with the old paint. This depends on how old the paint is and what type of paint was used. Just be cautious when doing large touch ups on walls that get a lot of light. In some cases you need to paint from corner to corner to cover the issues. Priming over the new texture or repairs is always a good idea also.
