If you are like many homeowners in the Portland area you are looking at selling your home in 2017. The prices are at all time highs currently and seem to be climbing steadily with all of the people moving to our area. Selling your home can be an easy task if you have kept up on the maintenance and you have a good eye for decorating. For the rest of us you may need to consider some changes prior to listing your home. Every year at Absolute Painting we get many phone calls from homeowners and realtors asking us to come give our opinion on how to make a home look better for sale. Many of these homes have sat on the market for a year or longer because the owners did not want to spend a dime to fix it up. Taking the attitude that you will let the next owners fix up your problems will likely cost you a ton of money if it does sell. This does not need to happen!
Here are some ideas that will likely make your home sell faster and for top dollar. Do some interior painting if you have any colors that are very light and neutral. As much as you loved the pink bedroom you did for you daughter the new homeowner will not. The orange accent wall in your dining room may have been in style 10 years ago but it needs to go. The best case scenario would be to have one neutral wall color in your home that will not stand out to anyone. Two or three colors can work as well if the work together but ask your realtor or a design person for an opinion if you are not sure.
Look at your ceilings and make sure they don’t have smoke stains or any water stains. This can be an immediate turn off to any buyer and can raise red flags. If ceilings need to be painted you should consider it. Most owners prefer white or slightly off white ceilings so the home seems bright.
Look at your cabinets, doors and millwork to see what condition they are in. If they are painted and have not been repainted in the past decade or two you might consider trying to fix them up. This can be somewhat inexpensive if you are doing touch ups to the bad areas only. If you need to fully repaint them it can be a bit spendy but walking into a home with freshly painted woodwork can make it look brand new again and potential buyers will notice the difference.
