Layering Color

by | Dec 26, 2013 | Home Maintenance, Interior Design, Interior Painting

Color is so personal and if you have a whole house/condo to paint it can be a bit overwhelming. Finding a color palette that speaks to you is the perfect place to start. Let the architecture of a space guide you as to what should be highlighted. Is there a wall of windows with a great view?

Do you have a dramatic fireplace? We want to use color to draw our eye to a given focal point but be careful, if you have too many design elements drawing attention it can get busy and distracting.

Are there archways that open into another room, posts, and beams? These are wonderful architectural elements that beg for some color play. Remember that darker colors tend to advance so use the darker color furthest away and a lighter tone towards the front of the house. This leads your eye further into your home and is very inviting.

The relationship of colors used whether in paint, furnishings or accessories express our personalities. Don’t forget to add a little of the unexpected. Mix it up and have fun with color, it’s the too perfect, everything “matches” look that has a staid, unnatural feel. Life is messy and there seems to always be more going on than we can sometimes handle but it is in these unexpected moments that we find humor and a sense of self.
