Painting Over Dark Colors: Tips from the Pros

by | Sep 10, 2024 | Interior Painting

Homeowners often ask us, as Portland interior painters, how we handle painting over dark colors inside their homes. In recent years, there’s been a shift toward lighter tones, particularly in interior spaces. This trend means we’re often tasked with covering up the deep, bold shades that were popular in the ’90s and early 2000s—think dark reds, deep blues, and other vibrant hues from that era.

So, how do we make those dark colors vanish for good? While it’s not rocket science, it can be tricky if you’re unfamiliar with the process. However, with the right techniques, you can successfully cover those old shades and enjoy a fresh, light, and airy new look for your space.

Best Practices for Painting Over Dark Colors

If someone decides they want to paint over a dark color I usually ask them what color they want to cover it with first.  If they want a similar dark color to what is on the walls currently this may be an easy project.  If they have a dark blue color currently and they just want a similar color we may be able to get away with just two coats of quality latex paint for good coverage.

In most cases these days, customers are saying they want to go with a light color such as a white or light gray color.  In this case, we would want to consider using a high-quality blocking primer to help seal in the old dark colors first.  Blocking primers can be good for covering all kinds of issues such as dirty walls, children’s artwork, water stains, and many other items as well.

If you want to cover a dark wall a latex primer that is meant to block is usually the best choice.  Sherwin Williams sells a blocking primer called ProBlock that comes in a water-based and an oil-based.  Oil-based is mainly used to cover really difficult things like ink or water damage but is much harder to work with than water-based primer.  We usually just recommend a water-based primer to cover the old dark colors unless you have other issues going on.

Before you apply the primer you always need to make sure the walls are clean, dry, and fairly dull.  Make sure they do not have any dirt, dust, grease, or other items that will affect the adhesion.  The primer coat is your base coat so you want to make sure that it will adhere well to the surfaces.  Always make sure that you ask the expert or read the label on your primer so it works properly.

We have some primers that we use that require a much longer time before they can be painted over.  Not following the dry time can greatly affect the outcome of the primer.  If a primer requires 8 hours of dry time and you paint over it in 3 hours it may not have cured properly and could cause the primer to get wet again which would make it almost useless and could cause a big mess.  The new primer may be dry to the touch but don’t be fooled by that.  You should also consider the humidity and temps at the time you do the project as that may cause the dry time to be even longer than suggested on the can.

If you have an extremely glossy surface you are trying to paint over you may need to sand it, clean it with a de-glosser, or apply a bonding primer to it before painting.  You may need to do a combination of all of these in some situations.  Some of the older paints were extremely glossy and latex paint did not like to stick to them.  We usually see this in older homes where they used a glossy oil paint.  Make sure the surface is somewhat dull when you prime and paint it or you may have adhesion issues and need to remove all the new paint which is a nightmare!

Steps for Painting Over Dark Colors

Here is our step-by-step guide on how to paint over dark colors effectively:

  1. Clean the surfaces if it has any signs of dirt or contaminants.
  2. Sand or clean with TSP or a gloss remover if it appears very glossy.
  3. Apply one coat of latex-blocking primer to seal in the dark color and read the label on how long it should dry between coats.
  4. Apply two coats of quality latex paint in the new color.  Some colors may require more than two coats even with a primer coat.
  5. We recommend using a high-quality roller cover and brush to apply all the primer and paint.

Best Options for Painting Light Colors Over Dark Ones

So now that you know how to apply the paint let’s talk about the products you should use.  You have many different paint brands to choose from when you paint your home.  Most paint companies make low-end or budget-friendly paints and they also make high-end paints that can be very expensive.  If you want to cover a dark color with a lighter color you will be much better off spending the extra money to get a product that will work well as they may save you a lot of time and money in the end.

Now you may not need the most expensive paint made but you should at least go for something middle of the road as that will usually do the job.  One of our favorite paints is Sherwin Williams Super Paint for interior painting of walls and ceilings.  It is a great product at an affordable price.  Depending on what paint store you choose we recommend asking a lot of questions as the employees are usually very helpful.

We like using Benjamin Moore Advance or Scuff X paints for trim and cabinets.  These are super high-quality paints and well worth the extra money.

Pro Tips for Achieving a Flawless Finish

Painting with dark colors can make a bold statement, but it requires a careful approach to ensure a flawless finish. From the right tools to the best techniques, here are some professional tips to help you achieve a smooth, even coat that highlights the beauty of your dark paint color.

1. Start with the Right Primer

Priming is essential when painting with dark colors. A tinted primer that matches the tone of your paint can help achieve deeper coverage with fewer coats. This is especially important if you’re covering a lighter or uneven surface. Look for high-quality primers specifically designed for dark colors, as they create a smoother base and help the paint adhere better.

2. Use High-Quality Brushes and Rollers

When working with dark paints, the right tools can make all the difference. Opt for premium brushes and rollers that are designed for a smooth, even application. For cutting along edges, a high-quality angled brush will give you clean, precise lines. For walls, use a roller with a medium to high nap (3/8” to 1/2”), depending on the texture of your surface. Avoid cheap tools, as they can lead to streaks, lint, or uneven coverage.

3. Apply Multiple Thin Coats

Dark colors are known for their rich pigmentation, but they also require careful layering to avoid streaks or blotches. Apply multiple thin coats rather than trying to cover everything in one thick coat. This ensures an even distribution of color and reduces the risk of drips. Allow each coat to dry fully before applying the next to prevent any pulling or uneven spots.

4. Avoid Overworking the Paint

One common pitfall when painting with dark colors is overworking the paint. Once you’ve applied a section, avoid going back over it multiple times. This can cause the paint to lift or leave streaks. Trust the process and let the paint settle as it dries, and if you notice any imperfections, address them with the next coat rather than reworking the wet paint.

5. Pay Attention to Lighting

Dark paint colors can look different depending on the lighting in the room, so make sure to test your color in both natural and artificial light. This will help you spot any inconsistencies and ensure that the color looks just as rich as you want it to. Use directional lighting while painting to see if you’re missing any spots or creating unintended streaks.

6. Don’t Skip the Drying Time

Patience is key when painting with dark colors. Make sure you allow ample drying time between coats to avoid smudging or uneven patches. Dark paints can take a little longer to dry than lighter ones, especially if you’re applying multiple coats. Check the manufacturer’s recommendations for drying times and resist the urge to rush the process.
