At Absolute Painting we often get asked if we do one or two coats of paint on interior walls and why? Some Portland area homeowners hear ads from paint companies talking about a one coat paint or a paint/primer product all in one. In most cases these are the more expensive paints that the paint companies sell. These products often cost more than $50 per gallon. More often than not you will find that the walls still require a second coat of paint to get full coverage.
We always recommend using high quality paint products from great paint companies such as Sherwin Williams, Miller or Benjamin Moore. Low quality products can cause you to get less coverage and less durability which may cause you to paint again sooner. You don’t always need to buy the most expensive paint in the store but we highly suggest not using the least expensive products.
Since are are professional painters we can almost always tell if two coats have not been applied by looking at them. You will more likely see inconsistencies such as dark and light spots in the paint. In some very dark colors you may need even a third or fourth coat of paint to achieve coverage. A tinted primer can help with some colors and your local paint store should be able to let you know what colors those will be.
In most cases unless you are painting with the exact same color and sheen of paint that had been used previously, we recommend two coats. The paint will look better and be much more durable with two coats. You are more likely to be able to wash the wall if it has a second coat. The color will be better with the second coat of paint as well.
