Protecting Your Roof

by | Nov 6, 2015 | Uncategorized

It is that time of year in Portland when the leaves are falling and causing problems with our roof, downspouts and gutters.  If you are a homeowner you need to be proactive with these items or they can cost you money that you could be spending on Christmas shopping.

Gutter leaves

Before the weather gets too nasty with snow and ice you should take time to get on your roof and do a visual inspection.  Look at shingles to see if anything looks damaged.  Walk around on your roof and see if you feel any weak spots that would indicate wood damage underneath.  Inspect your vent covers to make sure they are not broken.  Check your gutters and downspouts to make sure they are attached to the roof properly.  Take time to get all leaves out of your gutter once all the leaves are off your trees.  Make sure you can get water to flow down your downspouts so they are not causing water to overflow and do damage to your home.

While you are up on the roof you can apply moss killer to help prevent new moss growth over the winter.  You can buy this at Home Depot or other hardware stores for around $15 and it will be enough to treat most normal size roofs.  Usually you will only need to spread it on the side that does not get much sun but look for any signs of moss and apply as needed.  The rain will hit the powder and activate it so when it runs down the moss will die off.  If you find you have heavy moss growth already you should have it cleaned off professionally or you can attempt it yourself.  Removing heavy moss growth and keeping it away can add years to your roof.
