The Right Painting Tools For The Job

by | Apr 2, 2014 | Interior Painting

Many homeowners in Portland choose to paint small rooms themselves.  If you are a do it yourself type person that plans on tackling an interior painting project this year don’t forget to have all the right tools.  Here are a few essential items to help you with the project.

1.  Buy some tarps or something to protect your flooring and counters.  This is the most common mistake that homeowners make is thinking they will not drip paint.  Most latex paints will clean up with water on most surfaces but if it dries you may have a permanent problem.  You can also purchase flooring paper to cover floors or just mask off around the perimeter of the room if you are painting walls only.

2.  You should buy some lightweight spackle to fill nail holes, dings and cracks in drywall.  Please don’t use toothpaste to fill holes or fix drywall issues.  Also do not use a spackle knife to fill small holes as the problem will only get worse.  You can use a finger to fill most holes in walls and smooth out the excess.

3.  Investing in a good paint brush is so important.  At Absolute Painting our average brush cost is around $20 per brush.  A good brush can make the job so much easier and also give you better lines.  A bad brush will fall apart and leave bristles in the paint and on your wall.  A good brush can be cleaned out and used many times easily.

4.  Purchase a good roller handle and roller cover for your painting project.  A good roller handle should cost you about $10 at a paint store and a good roller cover should cost you about $8.  Both are well worth the money and will make life easier.  If you are using many paint colors you may want to buy a roller cover for each color you use.

5.   Finally you should buy some quality tape to mask off your woodwork and flooring.  If you plan on leaving the tape down for more than a day you should consider buying blue tape that won’t leave marks behind after it is pulled up.
