Absolute Painting & Power Washing has been in business in the Portland, OR area since 1995. In that time we have seen our fair share of roofs in need of moss treatment and moss removal. So I thought I would put out a blog post on roof moss control.
Moss grows on just about any residential roof out there. It grows on composition shingles, shakes, and cedar shingles as well. The typical location for moss to grow is on the north facing slopes of your home and in the shade caused by trees or other objects.
One of the first things to consider is how you can prevent the moss from growing in the first place. One method is to use a roofing material that moss can’t cling to; I did say almost any residential roofing material. Moss doesn’t do well on smooth surfaces so if you are the market for a new roof consider a metal replacement. A metal roof will practically eliminate the need for moss control on the roof. A metal roof will last a very long time, usually longer than most of us will be alive; at least me. The down side to a metal roof is that it can be very expensive.
Now that we know there is a method of preventing moss on the roof of your home. Let’s look at a few steps that can be taken to slow down the growth of moss on the current roof of your home. First thing you may want to do is remove any branches that are overhanging your roof. This aides in the drying of your roof as well as eliminating the shade that moss likes to grow in.
Another good idea is to keep your roof clean. Cleaning your roof a couple of times of year is a good method for keeping moss at bay. Keeping all the leaves, pine needles, and other debris off your roof will help it to stay dry. You should start at the top and work your way down; this will help prevent shingle damage. If your roof already has a lot of moss you may need to use a pressure washer.
A quick note on safety… If you roof is steep, more than four inches of rise per horizontal foot, hire a trusted professional. The people that do roof moss treatment for a living have the equipment for accessing and cleaning a steep roof.
From time to time our customers ask if we do moss removal and treatment. While we do not do moss removal, we will be happy to assist you with applying treatment to your roof. Why call us to assist you with applying your moss treatment?
Since we do our fair share of exterior painting and interior painting, we are a Portland painting company after all, we have ladders. We have tall ladders, short ladders, all ladders in between as well. Not only do we have ladders we know how to use them in a safe manner. So if you are planning on doing some roof treatment for moss this year give us a call so we can assist you with the treatment and we will bring our own ladders.
