Tips On Paint Finish Choices

Cleanability and Durability
While most manufacturers have developed all paint finishes with good cleaning qualities, a general rule is that the shinier the paint finish, the better it will stand up to washing and cleaning. Contact us to help you select the correct finish for each room.

Kid-Friendly Finishes
When painting children’s rooms, many painters recommend using an eggshell or satin paint on the walls and semi-gloss for doors and moldings. These finishes are formulated to better withstand repeated cleanings.

High Gloss Looks
Rather than choosing a high gloss paint for a whole room, use it sparingly in select locations, such as doors and trim. The brilliant surface can appear a bit cold and uninviting. Remember though this finish tends to really point out any surface imperfections.

Ceiling Paint
If you are looking for a basic white ceiling, you can use pre-mixed, matte finish paints off the shelf from almost any paint store. Because cleanabiltiy or coverage is not a particularly important consideration, some ceiling paints use cheaper formulations. If you need an exact color match for the color scheme of your room, choose regular tinted flat wall paint. Remember, many ceilings are not exactly white and need tinted. Contact us and we can get the color matched exactly for you.

Ceiling Finishes
Ceilings in most rooms are painted with a flat finish paint. You could also select an eggshell finish if the surface of the ceiling is flawless. Choose a glossier finish to help repel moisture, such as in a bathroom or kitchen.

Kitchens and Baths
Any room, such as a kitchen or bathroom, that will be exposed to water, splashing, or steam, should be painted with a semi-gloss paint on both walls and ceilings. A guest bath or powder room which will have less-frequent use, could be painted with lower-gloss paint, such as satin or eggshell finish.

Tips On Testing Your Choices
When you’re getting ready to select a color for a room, it’s important not to just buy a gallon and hope the color is right. You should test colors on a small area of the room you’ll be painting before making the final decision.

Many paint companies offer sample jars of 2 ounces to 4 ounces by mail order or in stores. It will generally cover a 2’x2’ section of the wall to give you a much better idea of the color. This is much more affordable than buying several quarts of paint and still gives you a good idea of what the paint will look like in your home.
