Why Paint Blisters or Bubbles

by | May 22, 2013 | Exterior Painting, Home Maintenance, Interior Painting, Power Washing

At Absolute Painting & Power Washing we see our fair share of blistered paint throughout the year. Whether it’s exterior painting in Hillsboro or interior painting in Lake Oswego, the Portland, OR area has its fair share of bubbled paint.

The question is usually the same when we arrive at the customers home, “How does this happen?” There are several factors to consider when diagnosing why the paint has blistered on a particular surface. There is heat and cold, moisture and soil, and chemical. Just one of these factors can cause a loss of adhesion between the paint and the surface it is being applied to. Once the paint begins to bubble it may start peeling as well.

Here are a few examples of what causes paint blistering or bubbling

  • Painting a damp, dirty, or hot surface
  • Applying oil-based or alkyd paint over latex paint
  • Improper surface preparation
  • Excessive moisture
  • Exposing latex paint to moisture shortly after paint has dried

These are some helpful tips on how to prevent paint from bubbling or blistering

  • Make sure the surface is clean and dry
  • Apply primer-sealer over any stains and let it dry completely
  • Prime new joint compound with flat latex paint or latex primer
  • Avoid painting in hot or humid conditions
  • Let paint dry completely before exposing the surface to moisture
  • Consider installing vents or exhaust fans in humid areas

There are a few things to understand before you attempt to repair paint bubbles on either the interior or the exterior of your home. If the blisters do not go all the way down to the original surface, you may be able to remove them by scraping and sanding. If the blistering does go down to the original surface, you will need to remove the cause of the bubbling paint, if possible. If the blistering has caused the exterior walls to peel, then a power washing may be required. Don’t forget to repair any caulking leaks and make sure the area is well ventilated.

If for any reason you find that repairing bubbled paint is not what you want to do. You can call Absolute Painting & Power Washing. We will be happy to assist you with any of the services that we provide.
