Creative Accent Wall Colors That Pop

An Introduction to Accent Wall Colors

The accent wall is back and better than ever! It’s been a decade or two since we’ve seen this simple and budget-friendly way to update a room.

Accent Walls draw your eye into a space and welcome a newcomer in by drawing their attention. It’s an inviting technique and becomes the center of attention.

What makes an accent color work? It’s all about the contrast and how it plays against a warm but rich neutral. Some of my favorites are Sherwin Williams Snowbound SW7004, Marshmallow SW7001, and Benjamin Moore’s Simply White #OC-117. To help you learn what colors would work best for your space, we offer a free one-hour consult with our Portland color consultant!

Bedroom Accent Wall Colors That Pop

Warm and rich but not too bright is “normally” where we go for bedrooms, creating a sense of coziness and relaxation. Sherwin Williams Naval SW6244 is a favorite but for a dramatic warmer look take a look at Benjamin Moore’s Stormy Sky #1616 paired with a classic like Carrara or its cohort Calcutta marble in the adjoining master bathroom.

Blush tones are sophisticated for a bedroom and a bit more subtle, think Sherwin Williams fading rose #SW6296, Apple Blossom SW0076, and Benjamin Moore’s #BM2104-60 Rose Silk. Romantic, lovely comfort.

Creative Kitchen Accent Wall Colors

With everyone spending more time at home, we’re getting a lot of calls asking “does Absolute Painting paint cabinets?” Many of us are wanting a change and a freshening up of sorts, and painting old kitchen cabinets is a great way to bring new life into a tired kitchen. Learn more about the process in our article Kitchen Cabinet Painting: Options, Colors & Cost!

We are still doing white cabinets and pairing them with either a darker color on the lower cabinets or an accent on the island. My favorite though is one we just finished using Midnight Oil, Benjamin Moore’s #1631 and those cabinets turned out stunning!

Even old farm-house kitchen cabinets take on a new life of their own when updated with a deep, rich, saturated color. Whether navy, black, teal, or evergreen, you can update with oversized brushed gold hardware and it’s like adding new jewelry to a favorite outfit. Finish off the look with elegantly-styled marble countertops and a touch of nature with floating shelves.

Dining Room Accent Wall Colors

Dining Rooms should invoke conversation, so I love a daring dining room! It is a room that is cozy and makes you want to stay awhile; a little jewel of a room tucked away in the center of the house.

Imagine the laughter of a corny “Dad” joke as the family gathers for a holiday meal, or after a bit of wine, people who didn’t know each other upon arrival leaving with a new friendship in the making. It’s a room that will hold memories, stories, secrets, and plans to get together again.

Don’t be afraid of dark rich emerald greens, navies, or even black. Tricorn Black, a tried and true friend in the Sherwin Williams deck, has been used on cabinets, walls, trim, and even a ceiling or two.

Living Room Accent Wall Colors

For those looking to illuminate their world with rich, saturated colors, look to Benjamin Moore’s Regent Green #2136-20 or #2053-20 Dark – both incredibly sophisticated and on point for a 2021 update.

Do you have a back wall with shelving? Try painting just the back of the shelves or the full wall and hang floating shelves for a dramatic, layered effect.
